State Tax Preparation

“If you lived or worked in two or more states during the year, a seasoned tax professional will help you understand how each state’s tax laws and regulations apply to you”

Similar to federal taxation, state taxation can be complicated especially when you move from or to a state during the tax year, or you worked in multiple states during the tax year. Because we have clients working in Reno, Nevada, and living on the California side of Verdi or Lake Tahoe, we have first hand knowledge of unique state tax issues.

State taxation generally comes with all the same issues related to federal taxation with the added complexity that many states may not conform to federal tax laws. For example, a state may not tax federal Social Security benefits or may partially tax Social Security benefits when you reach a certain income threshold. This situation will become very complicated very fast. If you lived or worked in two or more states during the year, a seasoned tax professional will help you understand how each state’s tax laws and regulations apply to you so that you pay only the tax you are required to pay to each state.

In addition to the things you can expect when we prepare your federal income tax return, you can expect . . .

  • We will analyze the nexus rules and income filing thresholds to determine if you are subject to a state’s taxing jurisdiction;
  • We will  help you determine the character of the income that is or is not be taxed in a state, and whether the state is an AGI adjusted state or a build-up state;
  • We will help you evaluate whether or not you should apportion or specifically allocate income to each state you lived in during the year; and
  • If your return is eligible, we will electronically file your state tax return(s) and send you an acknowledgement to that effect.
